Enrichment...

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.”

--C.S. Lewis

I hate to admit it, but I'm not sure what Lewis was getting at. My take is that literature at its best serves the same function as Jesus' parables, to clarify the truth of our lives, our motives, our sin, and our redemption. God's word does that, and fiction written in agreement with God's values and worldview does that too.
